The Reason Behind the Insurance
Posted by USAJJ in USA Jiu Jitsu, benefits on April 17, 2010
You know how USAJJ offers excellent insurance coverage for it’s members. Do you ever wonder why? Well, thanks to our friend Morrison Butler at KnuckleUp OBX, we can show you.
Did you HEAR it? That’s intense! And with the big gash from the surgery, it looks even crazier in person. The best part, though, is how he just walks off like it’s not a big deal. That’s tough.
Morrison was competing in Mission Submission 1.5 when it happened. When Morrison passed his opponent’s guard, Jay Speight a very talented 16 y/o, he set up a move called a Bicep Slicer. It’s called a Bicep Slicer; bet that’s a little worse than a Charlie Horse.
A Bicep Slicer is a painful move (no, really?) that super extends the nerves in the bicep and the forearm, but it’s not intended to break any bones. No submission in MMA is intended to break bones – they are aimed at joints and ligaments. What happened to Morrison was a really freaky accident.
An expensive one too. To the tune of $47,000. that’s a LOT more than a membership in USAJJ.
While we may practice and take precautions against injury, it can still happen to anyone. That’s why it is important to have the insurance. Here’s the breakdown:
General Liability -This program provides protection for your Martial Arts School its owners, directors, instructors and employees against claims of bodily injury liability, property damage liability and the litigation costs to defend against such claims.
Coverage is provided up to $1,000,000.00 per occurrence with a general aggregate amount of $2,000,000.00. There is no deductible and no charge for additional insureds.
School owners register for USAJJ here.
Accident Insurance - All youth and adult students and staff members of the Policyholder are covered while participating in sponsored activities. A member is also covered while traveling, directly and without interruption, to and from any Policyholder sponsored activity and his or her home or place of residence. Coverage is $100,000 per accidents with a $250 deductible.
Individual members register for USAJJ here.
So if you’re not a member, maybe you should reconsider. Unless you carry $47,000 in your back pocket.
KnuckleUp Fitness Outer Banks is Latest USA Jiu Jitsu Charter School
Posted by USAJJ in charter school on January 26, 2010

KnuckleUp in North Carolina is the 1st USA Jiu Jitsu Charter School in NC
Only a few days after announcing that USA Jiu Jitsu members qualify for an exclusive Jiu Jitsu Insurance policy, KnuckleUp Fitness in the Outer Banks (NC) joins our growing family, and we want to welcome everybody from the OBX into USAJJ.
Morrison Butler, GM for KnuckleUp OBX, has been following USAJJ closely for a while, due to the growing demand for jujitsu classes in the Outer Banks. After a quick talk with USAJJ’s National Tournament Director and founder of KnuckleUp Fitness in Atlanta, Chris Stolzman, Morrison’s club becomes the 1st charter school in North Carolina.
According to Morrison, joining USAJJ was the best way to ensure his students are getting the most qualified support for their training, and a great opportunity for them to join a bigger jiu jitsu community (after all, there isnt much of a bjj scene in the Outer Banks of NC).
As a Charter School, they have access to a list of benefits that is constantly growing:
- $1 Million General Liability Insurance For Club, Staff, And Students
- Official USAJJ Certificate for their Head Instructor
- Head instructor competes for FREE at USAJJ National Tournament
- 1 free seat at the next Instructor Training Course
- Access to the official Jiu Jitsu International class curriculum
Plus, KnuckleUp OBX can now use the official USAJJ APPROVED badge, which lets students know they’re training with a qualified instructor. The badge is also beneficial to other USAJJ members when on the area, because they qualify for a $10 mat fee at any Charter school.
To all of the staff and students at KnuckleUp OBX, on behalf of the USA Jiu Jitsu organization, welcome!
