Robert Drysdale to Speak with USA Jiu Jitsu
Posted by USAJJ in black belt council on March 9, 2010
Robert Drysdale is going to do an interview with USAJJ National Director Chris Stolzman! This is an exciting opportunity for USAJJ.
Brazilian-American Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Robert Drysdale has been training and competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 1998. Robert was born in the USA and then moved to Brazil with his family at the age of 6. As a teenager Robert returned to the USA to attend college in Las Vegas. There he began training with the Lewis-Pederneiras (Nova Uniao) association. It was quickly evident that Drysdale was a natural at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It was during that time in Las Vegas that Robert decided he would dedicate himself fully to the training, competing, and teaching the art of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Robert returned to Brazil in 2000 where he lived until 2008. During that 8 year period Robert Drysdale owned and operated a Jiu-Jitsu Academy in the town of Itu, Sao Paulo, Brazil. While in Sao Paulo Robert trained with the Maromba Club and later with team Brasa Jiu-Jitsu Club. His personal commitment to teaching, training, and competing at the sports highest level was absolute. He trained several times per week with his fellow teammates at Brasa Jiu-jitsu club headquartered in downtown Sao Paulo, Brazil. This elite team of world-class Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighters is composed of some of the best black belts in the world. It was at Brasa in 2004 Robert received his black belt from Leo Viera. In 2008 Robert relocated to the USA and is currently teaching and training in the city of Las Vegas, Nevada. Also, USAJJ is honored to have Robert Drysdale on the Black Belt Council.
This is going to be a comprehensive interview, and it’s exclusively with USA Jiu Jitsu.
So check back soon to see it. It’s going to be great!
Royce Gracie “On Board” With USA Jiu Jitsu

Royce Gracie & "Papa" John Gorman, USAJJ Commissioner
Earlier this week “Papa” John Gorman, USA Jiu Jitsu Commissioner, was in Miami to meet with legendary Royce Gracie at the Valente Brothers Academy.
Papa John, recently back from Brazil, where the Jiu Jitsu International organization was formed with the help of the 4 Grandmasters in the Red Belt Council, showed Royce first-hand the documents that make USAJJ and JJI official.
Royce grew up amongst most of JJI’s grandmasters and recognizes their importance and dedication to the sport that his family made popular.
He told Papa John that he’s fully “on board”, as long as his father’s (grandmaster Helio Gracie) legacy is respected.
Royce’s support of USA Jiu Jitsu and Jiu Jitsu International helps solidify the goal of uniting the sport, a goal that will lead jiu jitsu into the Olympics of 2016.
You can help us by becoming a member of USAJJ and talking to your students and/or coaches about it. USAJJ is a non-profit organization.

USA Jiu Jitsu Instructor Training Course Video Introduction
Posted by USAJJ in instructor training course on December 11, 2009
Watch as “Papa” John Gorman, USAJJ Commissioner, guides us through a brief overview of USA Jiu Jitsu’s Instructor Training Course.
This course took place from 12/04 to 12/06 at the USAJJ’s National Training Center in Washington, DC.
Students were exposed to different teaching methodologies, leadership development, business planning, and even how to plan a tournament. These concepts go well beyond technique to produce well-rounded teachers, instructors, and academy owners.
As you’ll see on the video, the course mixes lecture with practice; the ITC students take turns teaching an actual class in which even white belts are in charge of correcting and guiding upper belts. This training gives them the ability to become assistant instructors (in the case of white belts) or even the head instructor (for blue and purple belts that operate away from a black belt).
The last day of the course is dedicated to tournament planning, referee education, and the instructors are divided into the multiple staff requirements of a big tournament: timekeepers, score keepers, referees, registrations, weigh-ins, and tournament director.
After debating the best strategies, ITC students are put in charge of running an actual USAJJ In-House tournament.
The last tournament was broadcast live on uStream this past Sunday, and it was a great hit.
Below, check out pictures of the award ceremony for both the Instructor Training Course and the in-house tournament.
- William receives his ITC certificate
- Vu Tran receives ITC certificate
- Paul Barbosa receives his ITC Certificate
- Matt Volchanski receives his ITC certificate
- Ephram receives his ITC Certificate
- Chaz Roberts receives ITC certificate
- Chris Stolzman receives ITC certificate
- Black Belt Johnny Ramirez receives ITC level 2 certificate
