Instructor Training Course This Month!

Special guest, Larry Shealy!

Special guest, Larry Shealy!

Hey everyone, good news! We’re going to have an Instructor Certification Course later this month. If you are an instructor, an assistant instructor, or just want to be an instructor eventually, you’re exactly who we want to help. Teaching Jiu Jitsu takes a certain set of skills that need to be just as developed as your skills on the mat.

We’re holding it over a three day period, June 25, 26, and 27th. It will be two full days of instruction on Friday and Saturday, then a partial day on Sunday followed by graduation and certification.  It will be at the USA Jiu Jitsu National Training Center, 7841 Rolling Road,Suite D. Springfield, VA 22153.

As a special bonus, we’ll be having a guest instructor, Larry Shealy! Larry has been a member of USAJJ nearly from the get go, and is renown for his involvement in th Jiu Jitsu community. He is also a black belt, and a member of the Black Belt Council.

In 2003, Larry began developing the “Kid-Jitsu®” program along with the “Kid-Jitsu® Values Program”. This trademark registered program teaches children the fundamentals of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, while weaving targeted values into each lesson within the “Kid-Jitsu®” Children’s Curriculum.

So come down to the NTC and learn proper techniques for teaching Jiu Jitsu to other people. It’s guaranteed to be fun, and it will help you become a better teacher. Register online or call the NTC to reserve your spot now. Cost is free to member schools for the primary instructor, $175.00 for individual members, $250.00 for non-members.

First Details of USA Jiu Jitsu Tournament!

Part of the plan for our Jiu Jitsu organization has always been to hold an official USA Jiu Jitsu tournament. And now, that plan is finally coming to fruition. The first official USAJJ tournament is being held August 7th in Las Vegas!

Commissioner Papa John Gorman, Tournament Director Chris Stolzman, and NTC GM John Eidman have all been working long and hard to get this off the ground and in action. And while many of the details are still being ironed out, we are urging people to start pre-registering now. Many schools and teams have already committed, including New Breed Academy, Behring Jiu Jitsu, and KnuckleUp.

The location for the tournament in Las Vegas has been narrowed down to two venues, and once one is decided on, we’ll be sure to post it immediately.  Once we have a better idea of the number of people who will attend, we can work out all the rest of the details.

Also at the tournament, we will be posthumously presenting an award to founder Helio Gracie for his dedication and perserverance in making Jiu Jitsu what it is today.

Sorry for the scant details, but we wanted people to know this is finally happening. So mark your calendars for August 7th, and start training now. The first USA Jiu Jitsu tournament is now official!

Jiu Jitsu International (JJI) Officially Formed In Brazil Today

A group of Red Belt Grand Masters announced the formation of Jiu-Jitsu International in Rio De Janeiro Brazil today.

The elite of Jiu-Jitsu including João Alberto Barreto, Francisco
Mansur, Flávio Behring and Álvaro Barreto formed the organization as a non-profit association geared toward the inclusion of Jiu-Jitsu as part of the 2016 Olympics.

Jiu-Jitsu International will likely push for the Brazilian Olympic
Committee to endorse an arrangement similar to what Wushu enthusiasts were able to accomplish during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Wushu was not one of the 28 official Olympic sports, nor a demonstration event. Instead, it was called the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Wushu Tournament.

The association named John “PapaJohn” Gorman as the executive director of the organization. Papa John brings commercial business sense to the non-profit group, as he was formerly the executive director of Gracie Barra in the United States.

“Whether you call it a demonstration sport or an Olympic Games Jiu-Jitsu tournament, either way our sport will be included in the 2016 games if we organize now and put in the effort,” said PapaJohn.

Tatame.com reported earlier the group would work to guarantee recognition of Jiu-Jitsu by the International Olympic Committee, a requirement for inclusion in the games.

The Tatame report illustrates the grandmasters’ understanding of the sport’s amateur status.

“We need an international organization to lead and make the sport popular all over the world. No one can own Jiu-Jitsu,” said João Alberto according to the report.

Wow… what a wonderful wonderful day!

Less than 24 hours ago we sent a 3 line message to our community on Facebook and now we have over 200 applications from Jiu Jitsu students and schools all over the world.

We wanted to take the time to thank everybody that has already registered – you all ROCK!

We have all available hands working on processing the applications, contacting students’ schools, and we’ll have it all stabilized by no later than Thursday.

If you haven’t registered yet, now it’s the time – Registrations are completely free (for now).

USA Jiu Jitsu is the very first National body to go live – and it is the first step towards Jiu Jitsu International and our Olympics goal.

Once again, thank you very much for all that registered!

And if you haven’t, do so now – click on the respective links on the right side to register —>
